Applications/Benefits
The Hydro-Balanced Stuffing Box should be particularly beneficial on wells that exhibit short packing life due to lack of lubrication - dewatering gas wells or oil wells with a high water content - and on installations in environmentally sensitive areas. With pressure energized seals, the HBSB can also handle the higher tubing pressures used by some operators for gas control issues.
In the case of a problem well, the cost savings of the HBSB over a conventional stuffing box could be substantial, when you consider:
- Material and labor costs to replace packing every two to four weeks
- Oil on the ground is lost production
- Oil not produced while the well is shut down is lost production
- Clean up costs, such as monthly bioremediation treatments
- Polished rod replacement, due to high friction/temperature wear issues
In the event that VOC emissions from stuffing boxes become an issue, the HBSB could be the ideal solution, since the grease isolates the production fluid from the atmosphere. In addition, there should be much fewer landowner and public relations issues to deal with. It's difficult to put a dollar figure on the time and energy spent on these items, but the installation of this new technology shows "due diligence" on your part.

- The HBSB is designed to be used with a spray metal polished rod and without a polished rod liner.
- Pressure rating of 1500 psi.
- Currently available for use with 2 3/8, 2 7/8 tubing and 1 1/4, 1 1/2 polished rods.
